T.E.A.M. up for Phoenix’s orangutans!

October 1, 2008

T.E.A.M. Arizona Motorcyclist Training Centers and GoGreenOn2Wheels.org are rallying motorcyclists and community members to help on a mission to save the magnificent Bornean orangutans of the Phoenix Zoo.  Your help is needed to raise funds for a planned expansion, addition and renovation to the current Orangutan Experience exhibit, bringing their more than 30-year-old home up to today’s standard.

In the late 1960’s when the original Borneo orangutan exhibit was being planned and built, the Phoenix Zoo had adopted just one magnificent female but had the idea to incorporate the vision that maybe someday there might be two of these great apes hosted at our local zoo.  Today, the Phoenix Zoo is actually home to four amazing orangutans, Dutchess, Michael, Bess and baby Kasih.

At the time it was constructed, the exhibit involved materials and designs that most major zoos and wildlife parks were using. Sturdy concrete with imitation tree trunks attached platforms which completed a semi-circular steel enclosure that was, at that time, state-of-the-art. The Phoenix Zoo was very proud of this new conceptual presentation for such a unique primate.

But, knowing what we know today about the orangutan’s needs and preferred natural habitat, we must reconsider the increased family size and current limited space.  New standards for off-exhibit care and exercise of the orangutan require that improvements to their home must be made in order to properly present and care for these Bornean ambassadors.

A major $5 million dollar expansion, addition and renovation are planned for the Phoenix Zoo’s Orangutan Experience which will include a new and larger night house; a two-story climbing exhibit, bringing the audience up into the tree tops along side the orangutans; and finally, a renovation of the current exercise and exploring area..

How can you help?

Join in on a day of fun and festivities to help raise the funds to make the necessary improvements that can keep our furry friends here in the Valley.  T.E.A.M. Arizona and GoGreenOn2Wheels.org are proud supporters of the inaugural ZooRide taking place on October 12.  The event includes dual poker run beginning at either Chandler Harley Davidson (with a fun-filled stop at T.E.A.M. Arizona’s Gilbert location) or Arrowhead Harley Davidson and finishing at the Phoenix Zoo.  Festivities at the zoo include lunch, live entertainment, prizes and admission to the zoo.  If you have friends or family members that don’t ride, just have them join you for the activities at the zoo for a discounted admission.  Cost to enter the poker run and all included event activities is only $25 per person or $40 per couple if you register in advance.  For events at the zoo only (no motorcycle required), it’s just $15 per person.

What are you waiting for?  Get revved up today by visiting www.phoenixzoo.org for more information and pre-registration details.
