Customer service at its worst!

December 9, 2008

abbieYou know when things go from bad to worse, there’s nothing much you can do about it.  Unless, of course, you are a public relations professional with a blog and you tell absolutely everyone you know about the experience.

Do not, under any circumstances, use the services of The Original Apt. Movers.  They do a great job of quoting you a “fixed” price and an estimated time of arrival.  Until move-day comes, when the fixed price can change if you add just one block to the travel distance and the time block is nothing more than a metaphor for “sometime that day.”

After much discussion, debate and argument over who said what when, the movers finally arrived, got the truck loaded and off to the new place.  When all was said and done, the simple task of moving my 95-year-old grandmother from a one-bedroom apartment to a studio apartment less than five miles away took nearly 12 hours.

Good news is, she’s all settled and loves her new place.  Better news is if I can help it, no one will ever use that company again.

I just recently had a similar experience…moving my 81 year old recently widowed grandma from a two bedroom home to a one bedroom apartment…after delays, breaks and just disappearing for two hours on what they called a “Lunch Break” (it was 4pm!), it took about 10 hours from door to door. While I used another company than yours, it sadly seems this happens more often than not in that industry. Quite honestly, the best experience I ever had with movers was a tip from a friend to use a no-name company that may or may not have had some illegal workers (not sure). They were polite, got the job done two hours faster than promised, and even helped me put a bed together.
