Put another log on the fire

December 19, 2008

scott4I’ve been to a lot of different types of parties over the years with dozens of themes, celebrations and some just because.

I notched another first recently when I attended a “Burn the Broken Bats” party.  The Players baseball team, which I’ve been a part of since the squad got its act together last year, rounded up all our broken lumber from batting practices and games and used it to keep warm on a crisp December night.

bats-on-fireAll the usual baseball banter was in full force.  “He’s a hot hitter,” “Stay hot,” “He’s on fire,” “Too hot to handle” and “He’s en fuego” were all clichéd-to-death.  And oddly enough, it was funny each time someone said it or some sort of variation.

The wins for The Players are quite far and few between, but there isn’t a team I’ve seen anywhere that has more fun than us.  Maybe it’s part of our unknown strategy to humor ourselves and our opponents to the point they forget how to pitch and hit.  And it’s too bad we can’t get bonus runs for having a two-hour comedy show emanate from our dugout during each game.

Now how many outs are there and what’s the count?

Batter up! (and I don’t mean Aunt Jemima!) Isn’t it great to have a group of pals where camaderie is king? Ours is our dog walking group in Alta Plaza park in San Francisco. Always a blast!

All the best for the holidays! Cheers, David Landis
