Cronkite Mentorship Program good for everyone

February 4, 2009

abbie2I was asked several months ago to mentor an incoming freshman at the new Cronkite School of Journalism at Arizona State University.  Everyone who knows me knows I enjoy working with up and comers in our profession so, of course, I said yes.

Diana and I have met a half-dozen times since August – she is bright and intelligent and is just starting to understand what a great career she is choosing.  I know we are in good hands when I meet people like Diana.

The school hosted an evening reception and I was pleasantly surprised that there are about 40 of us who have agreed to mentor students.  People from all aspects of the communications world – agencies, print and broadcast professionals – were in attendance.

cronkite1According to John Crosby, a former congressman from Massachusetts,   “Mentoring is a brain to pick, an ear to listen and a push in the right direction.”  I hope we are all willing to be that for someone.
